FIVE Talks Money

[L&K Magazine - August 2000]

SCOTT
What's the most you've ever spent on a romantic prezzie?

I spent £1000, but I'm not telling you what it was on!

Have you ever refused to pay for a meal?
Yes, the other day actually. I went into a restaurant and I told the manager I just wanted to have a drink with my mates. But he said I had to eat and started being really rude, so I had an argument with him and he told me I had to pay! There were eight security men inside the restaurant, eight outside and about four policemen! I didn't pay tho'!

What's the most extravagant thing you've ever bought?
My mobile bill is about £1000 a month - then I've got my home phone bill on top of that!

So Scott when was the last time you couldn't afford to buy something?
When I was younger I always wanted the sort of trainers my pals had. I'd save up my pocket money, but by the time I'd saved enough, my mates weren't wearing 'em anymore. I was really gutted!

Do you carry cash around?
Rich is the worst for that, he's never got cash on him! Sometimes if I'm at home and we've ordered a pizza, I'll say to my mates, 'I haven't got any cash on me', and they end up paying, saying, 'Can't believe we've ended up paying and you're the one with the money!' But I always pay them back.

Do 'other people' sort out your bills?
Yeah, we all share the same accountant to handle the finances.

Do you take your wealth for granted?
Nope, I always expect to get the worst service, 'cause that's what I usually get!

Do you put a limit on what you'd spend on an item of clothing?
Not really, but every time I buy something, I still think about the price. I'm a normal person. I've paid £200 for a pair of trainers, but put it this way, I wouldn't walk into Gucci and buy a pair of jeans if I could get exactly the same in Marks and Spencers! I just can't understand buying labelled stuff for the sake of it. The top I'm wearing now only cost me a fiver!

At what point did you know you'd 'made it' to the high life?
I think you have days where you realise and days that you don't. Sometimes when I pull up outside my house, I stop and think to myself, 'What are you doing? You've got a house, you've got a nice sports car', and that makes me sit back and really appreciate it.

Do you shop in high street stores, or is it all Harrods and Harvey Nics?
I'll buy anything. As long as I think it looks good, I don't care what anybody else thinks.

Would you ask a shop to open outside its normal hours especially for you?
I've had people say, 'I know you get bothered when you shop here, so ring any time and I'll open the shop for you,' but I've never done it. I think if there was a certain shop that I really liked and I always got hassled in there, then maybe I would.

Do you ever wince at the size of your phone or credit card bills?
All the time - I told you 'bout my phone bill, didn't I?

SEAN
What's the most you've ever spent on a romantic pressie?

Two hundred odd quid. I bought this girl an Armani watch and she lost it! All that effort and all that money! I won't do it again!

Have you ever refused to pay for a meal?
I've not refused, but I do hate spending loads of cash on something that's not worth it.

What's the most extravagant thing you've ever bought?
A camcorder, I guess. It's not that much, but then I don't drive like these lot. I tell you what tho' - I spend a fortune on me rent!

So Sean when was the last time you couldn't afford to buy something?
It was probably before the band when checking out studio equipment, but I can get it all these days.

Do you carry cash around?
I've always got loadsa change on me. I'm always getting money out the band - I hate not having anything on me.

Do 'other people' sort out your bills?
It doesn't matter who takes care of them though - 'cause in the end we pay for 'em!

Do you take your wealth for granted?
Never - I'd never take it for granted 'cause I know what it's like to have none. I might be alright now, but anyone can end up homeless.

Do you put a limit on what you'd spend on an item of clothing?
I don't put a limit as such, but I never just blow my cash.

At what point did you know you'd 'made it' to the high life?
Even now I don't think we've 'made it' - we're just doing what we're doing and that's it.

Do you shop in high street stores, or is it all Harrods and Harvey Nics?
I wouldn't go to Harrods or anywhere like that. You're better off going down the road to a normal store 'cause you can get the same thing for half price.

Would you ask a shop to open outside its normal hours especially for you?
No way we'd have the power to do that!

Do you ever wince at the size of your phone or credit card bills?
Always! Mine are always huge - I hate that time of the month!

ABS
What's the most you've ever spent on a romantic prezzie?

A lot! That's all I'm saying!

Have you ever refused to pay for a meal?
Abs:
I've never refused to pay

Scott: Yes you have!

Abs: When have I ever refused to pay for a meal? I'm probably the most generous person I know! But I only refuse to pay if I've been charged for things I haven't used, like on a hotel room bill.

What's the most extravagant thing you've ever bought?
I blew about £300 on records in one go.

So Abs when was the last time you couldn't afford to buy something?
I don't try to buy anything I can't afford. Before the band, I didn't have any money, so I couldn't afford anything I wanted! I had to scrimp and save up.

Do you carry cash around?
Yes. I've probably normally got about £20 on me, and my card. I don't normally have to borrow money off people.

Do 'other people' sort out your bills?
I do take some things into my own hands. I pop down to the Post Office to get a tax disc for my car and stuff.

Do you take your wealth for granted?
I'm very appreciative of what I've got. When my mates are back home mending videos for a living and I'm in Brazil sitting by the pool in a nice hotel, 'course I still think 'Wow!'

Do you put a limit on what you'd spend on an item of clothing?
I've never spent more than £100 on a pair of trainers. I'm not a big spender on stuff like that.

At what point did you know you'd 'made it' to the high life?
I took a couple of my cousins shopping to a sports shop and told them they could have whatever they wanted. It was lovely being able to do that for my family. And to take my mum out and get her a nice necklace, that feels really good.

Do you shop in high street stores, or is it all Harrods and Harvey Nics?
If there's a plain designer t-shirt for £50 and one from a normal shop for £20, I'd buy the '20 one. It's exactly the same top, it's just the one of them has got a label, and I'm not like that.

Would you ask a shop to open outside its normal hours especially for you?
No shop's have offered that actually.

Do you ever wince at the size of your phone or credit card bills?
Not really, I'm quite sensible.

J
What's the most you've ever spent on a romantic prezzie?

It would have been before I was in the band, about £150 I think. It was for Christmas and spread out over a few things.

Have you ever refused to pay for a meal?
Yeah. One time this waitress took ages to serve us and then dropped the food everywhere! And the stuff that did make it onto the table was freezing cold! Well, we walked out and the owners went nuts! They came chasing after us and said we had to pay 'em and we refused and ended up having this massive argie bargie in the street!

What's the most extravagant thing you've ever bought?
I bought myself an Audi TT [funky sports car] and its gorge - its diamond black and I love it!

So J when was the last time you couldn't afford to buy something?>
It would have been about a year ago, 'cause now if I see a nice watch or jacket, I'll have it!

Do you carry cash around?
I always make sure I have at least £50 on me 'cause you never know!

Do 'other people' sort out your bills?
Actually, yeah - I know that sounds really rubbish and lazy, but we're out the country so much that we forget about the bills and are always getting red letters and court summons!

Do you take your wealth for granted?
Definitely not. It all came to us so quickly and it could go just as quick, so I'm quite careful with money things.

Do you put a limit on what you'd spend on an item of clothing?
On clothing I would never spend a fortune, never more than £200 - I'm not the sort of person who's that into labels. We do wear a lot of them but that's 'cause our stylist gets them in. On other things tho', I'll spend a bit more, like my watch - it was just over a grand!

At what point did you know you'd 'made it' to the high life?
There can be moments. A few weeks ago I was out with Melanie [C that is!] having a bite to eat before we went to a massive showbiz party and Michael Caine came over to us and started talking away - and I though 'Blimey! This is a long way for J from Warrington to have come!'

>Do you shop in high street stores, or is it all Harrods and Harvey Nics?
High Street every time. I've only been to Harrods once and that was only 'cause I needed something for the Brits and I was in a massive hurry.

Would you ask a shop to open outside its normal hours especially for you?
Never! I cant play the big pop star role - it totally embarrasses me. When people treat me like I'm famous now I get really uncomfortable.
Do you ever wince at the size of your phone or credit card bills?
Oh yeah, but mine are about a tenth the size of Scott's! I'm moaning away and then he tells me how much he's spent and I shut up!

RICH
What's the most you've ever spent on a romantic prezzie?

I bought one girlfriend a new necklace - it cost three grand!

Have you ever refused to pay for a meal?
No, but if something was wrong, I'd send it back. I do leave tips, but not if the service is bad.

What's the most extravagant thing you've ever bought?
I've bought myself a house and car, they're expensive. But as far as extravagance goes, I think the most I've spent was when I went on holiday to the Seychelles.

So Ritchie when was the last time you couldn't afford to buy something?
I want things every day, but I think 'This is so stupid, you don't need it'. But money burns a hole in my pocket. At the beginning of the band, we were on about £100 per week, and that was blown by Wednesday.

Do you carry cash around?
I do carry cash around, but I've also got a card. A lot of the time I run out of cash. I borrowed a couple of quid off Scott's dad t'other day to get some coffees. I haven't paid him back but I always do!

Do 'other people' sort out your bills?
Yeah, we've got an accountant. And then there's my mum - she tells me, 'You haven't paid this bill and they're gonna be chasing you!'

Do you take your wealth for granted?
If I pay for the best, then yeah, I expect to get it. But if the record company are paying for us to stay in a hotel, we don't expect the best, but we expect to be comfortable. At the end of the day, we're making money for the record company, so it's a bit of a mickey-take if they stick us in a dump.

Do you put a limit on what you'd spend on an item of clothing?
Yeah. Say I saw a pair of trainers that I really wanted, I probably wouldn't pay any more than £300. But if I was going to buy a nice suit, you have to fork out. But I wouldn't pay more than £2000. Not that I'd really buy a suit!

At what point did you know you'd 'made it' to the high life?
It kind of happened in stages really. But the initial thing was a shock. When girls started recognising me in shopping centres, that was weird.

Do you shop in high street stores, or is it all Harrods and Harvey Nics?
I'd still shop in the high street, but I don't often get time. If our stylist bought stuff from the high street, and I liked it, I would wear it.

Would you ask a shop to open outside its normal hours especially for you?
People like Madonna would probably have to do that sort of thing, but I wanna live my life as normally as possible. I'm still part of the human race, y'know!

Do you ever wince at the size of your phone or credit card bills?
Yes! A phone company called me once to check that my phone hadn't been stolen 'cause it was being used so much. But its 'cause I call a lot from abroad - then the fees really rocket!
