Abs To Release Reggae Cover
Yahoo interview at the Ivor Novello, May 2002

Former Five star Abs Breen has revealed that he's to release a cover of Althea & Donna's 1977 chart-topper, Uptown Top Ranking, as his first solo single this summer.

Speaking to us during this year's Ivor Novello Awards in London on May 23rd, the pint-sized teen heartthrob revealed that the new material he's working on will surprise a lot of Five's fans, as he's intending to explore sounds that the pop hitmakers didn't touch.

"The first single is my rendition of a track called Uptown Top Ranking," Abs explained, reasoning, "So you can expect something along the reggae kind of feel. But the album is different. I've got a dance kind of feel, I've got like a soul kinda vibe. I got a rap t'ing! It kind of goes up all over the place."

However, fans will have to wait a while for the album, as its release depends on the success of Abs' first couple of singles.

On the subject of Ash frontman Tim Wheeler's criticisms of the pop scene, Abs said: "Whatever people say, all kinds of categories of music are sliding into pop. You got like rap in pop, you got soul in pop, you got country, you got dance. Pop is just an abbreviation of popular music and what's wrong with being popular?"

While he admits that Dido's "cool", Abs was disappointed that DJ Pied Piper didn't scoop the Ivor for Best Dance Song, reasoning, "Them boys deserve to even at least win something , 'cos it would have made it a bit more interesting, if anything I s'ppose."

Fans will be able to hear Abs debut his new material at this year's London Mardi Gras, which is set to take place on London's Hackney Marshes, on July 6th.
